A portable scanner, also known as a data collector, allows you to scan product barcodes and retain information such as a count of an item.

You may want to provide your customer with a scanner to select products for a Gift Registry or for purchases.  The customer simply browses the store, scanning desired items.  You then plug in the scanner to the computer and at the invoice screen choose to import what was scanned.
