SMS Opt-in & Opt-out

Previous pageReturn to chapter overviewNext page

You must get consent before sending text messages to your customers. Without consent, you run the risk of facing fines, damaging your brand, and annoying your customers. By getting consent first, your text messaging will be legal and yield a greater response as you’re texting customers who want to receive your messages.

Even if you already had a customer's cell phone number listed in POSitive, they must give you consent before you can send texts to them. What constitutes consent and how do you get it? Customers opt in by texting a keyword, such as Start  (e.g., “Text START to 5095558888 to get our texts”) By texting your keyword to subscribe, they give consent to receive your messages. POSitive must receive the opt-in keyword from each customer first, before you can send texts to them.

Conversely, customers may also Opt-out of receiving text messages by texting a keyword, such as Stop. When POSitive receives a Stop keyword from a customer, it will prevent further texts from being sent to them. If a customer wishes to receive text messages again, they must text Start to your text number.

This process can be explained to your customers by putting messages on your receipts, and signage in your store. For example, by giving their consent, customers may receive coupons, promotional and other messages from your business.
